American History X clearly demonstrates the different components that make up identity. Identity is malleable, it starts out pure, and is moulded, constantly changing and evolving from its initial clean state. American History X shows that identity is influenced by outside factors in life, through the development and contrast of Derek and younger brother Danny we see how identity is created and destroyed. The experiences of Derek, in particular, show the development of his character, and identity, complemented by film techniques that force comparisons between Derek and Danny. At the same time, American History X conveys a moral about racism and exploitation of youth that keeps the attention and focus of an audience.
