Did Stalin's Policies Make His Reign a Success?

Stalin's reign cannot be considered a success as his policies of collectivisation and industrialization did not increase the standard of living of the Soviet people. When Stalin became leader of the Soviet Union in 1922, he had a strong vision for the future of the Soviet Union. Stalin's vision was of the Soviet Union becoming an industrial power of the world. He wanted to modernise the Soviet Union, and he wanted to do it fast. Stalin set upon establishing collectivisation and industrialization. However these policies were designed to build up the strength of the Soviet Union regardless of the impact on the Soviet people. Stalin's lack of concern for the welfare of the people meant that as a result from industrialization, horrific living standards and working conditions were experienced by the Soviet people.
