The Laser

Summary:   A history and overview of the laser, a device that produces amplified coherent light. The laser's many practical uses in today's society range from CD players, scanners, and printers to surgical instruments and military missile defense.


Lasers are actually a large part of everyone's modern day business. Without realizing it we have used them a lot and they influence us today. 35 years ago when they were invented, they could have never imagined how useful lasers would someday become.

The attempt to build a laser was first tried in 1958. Charles Townes and Arthur Shawlow research possible ideas to create a laser. They are the ones who came up with the idea to call it a laser. Laser means light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. Two years later the first laser was actually made. Two men claim that they were the first to create the laser, Gordon Gould and Theodore Maiman. The first laser was made in America after countless fruitless attempts.
