The Concept of Sacrifice: A Comparison between Kafka's The Metamorphosis and Camus' The Stranger
To make a sacrifice is to let something go because of another thing that is considered to be more important. In The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kafka, Gregor makes sacrifices for his family while in The Stranger, by Albert Camus, Meursault makes sacrifices for himself. Gregor sacrifices his future and dreams in order to provide for his family, in comparison to Meursault who sacrifices his future for his own beliefs. Gregor also sacrifices love and other distractions in order to be able to work full-time and produce more money for his family, unlike Meursault who, by being in jail, is proud to be sacrificing his love affair and free time. In the end, Gregor gives up his life in order to not be a burden to his family; unlike Meursault who gives up his life for his own beliefs, which is his truth.
