Napoleon Bonaparte, the most famous Frenchman in history died yesterday as a result of stomach cancer. He was born August 15, 1769 to Carlo Buonaparte and his wife Marie-Letizia in Ajaccio, Corsica. When Napoleon was 10 years old, he was enlisted in the military academy at Brienne, France. For the next couple of years, Napoleon was a struggling soldier in isolated areas. Between the years of 1790 and 1796, he tried to help the French Rule. In 1795, he met and fell in love with his future wife. Napoleon and Josephine de Beauharnais were married March 9, 1796 in Paris. Two days after the wedding, Napoleon was named commander of the Army of Italy. After winning battles all over Europe (Dego, Millesimo, Mondouli, Milan etc.), he returned to France. He was there called the greatest French general of all time. Napoleon wanted so much to become Emperor of the French. In 1802, he was voted consul for life. In 1804, he finally achieved his dream, he was named Emperor of the French. When Russia announced that they would no longer look after the Continental System, Napoleon decided to invade Russia. Before the invasion, Napoleon had almost a million men. By the time the invasion was over, Napoleon had about 10,000 men left. The winters and the killings took its toll on Napoleon's men. That was in 1810. Napoleon's last fight was when he met the French in Waterloo in 1815. Napoleon was put into exile on the rocky island of St. Helena. That's where he was when he died yesterday, May 5, 1821.
