Despite all of the allegations and controversy relating to Schliemann's personal life and work ethic, he still had a profound and permanent impact upon archaeology. This can be seen from firstly, the fact that he changed the way archaeology was approached by tackling it as a science and using it to solve historical problems. Secondly, he popularised archaeology, bringing it to the forefront of culture and education. Thirdly, Schliemann revolutionised the way historians thought about Troy and ancient sources, leaving an everlasting impact upon ancient history. Fourthly, Schliemann's lies and shady personal life have not devalued his amazing excavations and his contribution towards history. Finally, the accusations of poor archaeological technique are for the most part invalid, as these methods were common practice amongst his colleagues.
