"The Glass Menagerie" Character Sketches

Summary:   Characters in "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams use imaginative escapism to remove themselves from their dreary lives. Personality traits and actions of the five main characters are described.


"The Glass Menagerie" is a drama by Tennessee Williams about the lives of a family in St. Louis, the Wingfields. The Wingfields lead very depressing, unfortunate lives. As a result of these sad lives, the characters use activities or memories to emotionally escape from their lives. So it is obvious that escapism is the prevailing theme in this drama, and there is also a fifth character, besides Amanda, Laura, Tom, and the gentlemen caller. Although, this fifth character does not interact with the other characters, as he left the Wingfields years ago. Each of the Wingfields play a part in the escapism theme in their own different ways. The fifth character also plays an important role in this drama.
