Immigration

Summary:   Reasons for early immigration to the United States and the laws that governed it. Also, how immigration is different in today's society.

In the beginning of the nineteenth century, immigrants started to arrive in the United States. Many left to America cause of religious reasons, war, depressions, and etc. For example, the first immigrant groups were the Spanish, English, and the French. Then after, the British started coming. This started to create people from all different kinds of backgrounds and ethic groups. But in this time, New York State plays an important role in immigration and this still happens today. Immigrants arriving changed New York State in general as there are different and same for those who immigrated today and those in earlier times.

Immigrants started coming over to the United States. Some of them settled in California and other states. Most of them settled in New York State. For example, in document one, the first thing the immigrants saw the Statue Liberty for the first time this shows the symbol for freedom as shown in Document 1. Most of the immigrants came to New York State because it had a stronger economy, more jobs were available, and the location is near waterway so the accessibility for everything is easier. Since there were more jobs, people could earn more money than at their own country. This started passing as United States, specifically New York State, was a successful state.

There were similar things that are shown by immigrants arriving in the past and the present. According to Document 3, there were many immigration laws that targeted Chinese that limited them to come to the United States, then not only the Chinese couldn't come but the whole eastern hemisphere or also immigrants from Europe and Asia couldn't come but then the limits for Asian Immigrants lifted so then they could enter. Nowadays, those laws still apply and almost everything single group of immigrants can freely enter the United States. Based on Document 4, the ethnicity of people in New York didn't change because there are still Irish, German, Russians, Italians, and other groups that live there.

Therefore in Document 6, the Oath of Allegiance shows how people nowadays still also want to escape their country to just go to the United States to have a better life. This still exists today.

Immigration is different in the past and present in many ways. We have laws that do not single out a racial group but in the past, different quota laws singled out the Chinese group. This happens because other racial groups such as Russians, Italians, Germans, and other groups are scared that they will take over their land and take over their jobs as shown in Document 4. It is also different in the past and present in many ways because nowadays, there are different rules on how to come to United States. For example you need Visa, or types of alien cards. In Document 2, this shows how immigration changed passed time. More people started coming during the 1900s, but on the other hand, in 1995, less arrived. From Document 5, it tells how there are unemployment problems being fixed in the past. Now, employment problems are fixed and almost everyone that can be employed is employed.

Immigrating to the United States changed not only the immigrants in many ways but also changed the United States itself. After that, the Industrial Revolution started taking in place when it increased the United States' economic trade also at the same time caused unsanitary environment, worse living conditions, poor wages, child labor, racism towards new immigrant groups and unhealthy environment. But the Progressive Movement created this changed the Industrial Revolution. The Progressive Movement started in the 1900s because many people had labor conditions, housing concerns, child labor, women suffrage, environmental issues and racism so that is why it was created. This is how the United States started becoming one of the economical, political, and social powers of the world.
