The Lack of Faith in "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea"

Summary:   A plot summary of Jules Verne's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." A key theme of the novel is that although Captain Nemo showed respect for God, his lack of faith in God caused him to seek revenge against humanity. Nemo's unfaithful behavior toward God made him selfish and callous toward people.


This adventure story is about a captain, named Nemo, who was a man of great knowledge in science, especially about the sea, and of keen intellect that knew almost everything about the sea creatures. He captured the Professor Aronnax, his servant Conseil, and Ned Land, the harpooner, in his submarine and took them on an undersea journey. Nemo gave his captives the freedom to be in any place of the submarine and to look at everything in it, but never once did he allow them to escape from it. The book, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne, illustrates that although Captain Nemo showed respect for God as the Creator, he did not have faith in God; rather, he sought revenge against humanity.
