Little Pearl from The Scarlet Letter

Summary: At the end of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, the whereabouts of little Pearl are left unresolved, leaving one to speculate what might have happened to her. Pearl's newfound wealth, bequeathed to her by Chillingworth upon his death, leads one to believe she would come to experience great things as a result.

At the end of The Scarlet Letter, a matter is left unresolved, regarding the whereabouts of little Pearl. The girl is by many thought to have forgotten her roots and sought for refuge in the oblivion of her wealth and newly gained fame.

Now, as to her wealth and fame... why did Chillingsworth, so kindly leave it in his will said that all his state (considering a fair amount) would be left in the name of the forbidden child. Maybe it was that the old man saw as many others, unprecedented beauty and passion in the child, which he could not contain in himself. Still the benevolent action of Roger Chillingsworth questions his state of mind in the latter part of his life.
