Analysing the Progress of a Wheeled Cart along an Inclined Plane
of a rolling cart on an inclined plane.
Introduction:
This experiment was centred on a basic action, the movement of a cart down an inclined plane, pushed along by the force of gravity. Light gates, attached to the inclined plane in such a way that they registered the passing of the cart, recorded the time taken for each downhill run. One light gate was placed where the cart started from standstill, and the other a specified distance further down the plane. The two light gates were placed at progressively increasing distances away from one another: by measuring the time taken to travel a set distance the light gates allowed calculation of the cart's velocity and acceleration. The cart was massed, and acceleration values were applied to this mass to find the values of net force on the cart. These values, in turn, led to calculation...
