Testing Liver Catalase Activity and the Effect Copper Sulphate Inhibition.
Summary: An experiment with liver catalase enzyme, studying the effects of copper sulphate inhibition. Contains a discussion of all relevant topics: amino acids, R-groups, etc etc.
The aim of this experiment was to find out the effect of different levels of copper sulphate inhibition on the activity of liver catalase. Pieces of liver containing the enzyme catalase were soaked in solutions containing different concentrations of copper sulphate. The soaked liver was then placed in a sealed container with hydrogen peroxide. The resulting reaction produced oxygen gas as a product. The level of oxygen gas was measured using a gas syringe at ten-second intervals in order to determine the rate of reaction for the enzyme.
Equipment:
• Hydrogen Peroxide solution
• Conical flask
• Bung, with two access holes
• Thistle flask
• Gas syringe
• Scales
• Liver containing catalase
• Stopwatch
• Copper II Sulphate solution, concentrations 2%, 1%, .75%, .5%, .25% by volume.
Hypothesis:
This experiment aims to prove that copper II sulphate acts as an inhibitor on the activities of catalase enzyme in pig’s liver. Higher concentrations are predicted to cause more inhibition and...
