Dr James O'Neil Mayne was the principal person responsible for giving the University of Queensland its home at the grand and sprawling grounds of St Lucia.

If it had not been for him, The University of Queensland would be sitting in a much less impressive 170 acre position at Victoria Park.

He bought the 274 acres of land at St Lucia for ₤80 000, and together with his sister donated the 280 acres of land at Moggill where the University of Queensland's Veterinary School is today located.

But do the students of this university realise and appreciate who these generous benefactors were? James and Emelia Mayne's names are still virtually unknown among students.
