Claudio and Hero

Summary:   Analyzes the character Claudio from Shakespeare's play Much Ado About Nothing. Questions if Claudio's actions in the play demonstrate his depth of feelings toward Hero. Concludes that his true feelings are concealed by his egotistical behaviour.


The play Much Ado about nothing is a romantic comedy; Shakespeare has presented the main theme of love in the play using the characters who are: Hero, Beatrice, Claudio and Benedick. He has used the characters as dramatic devices to get his point across. The plot of the play is based on upon the relationship between Claudio and Hero, which is supported by the sub plot of Beatrice and Benedick's relationship.

Shakespeare using minor themes such as illusion and reality develops the main theme of love, For example Hero and Claudio's relationship is based on love at first sight, at first it seems as though Claudio is truly in love with Hero however later in the play we find that this may not be the case.
