In his plays, Williamson brings out the "ocker" in a character and uses everyday Australian slang to make his characters seem more believable. He uses the traditional roles of males and females to portray real family situations, confrontations between strangers and friends, and language to create a sense of realism.

In The Removalists, Williamson explores the issue of violence in male sexual and social roles. He used the "ocker" character to portray Kenny, and to a lesser extent Constable Simmonds, however he retained a professional air about him. In Australia at that time, men and women still had distinguishable social roles and the men used violence to show control and to protect the women. This is apparent in the police officers, who handled the situation at Kenny's apartment by unfairly hitting and kicking him to impress the women.
