Each of these represents two entirely different things. The mountains are gigantic and majestic, while the plains are soft rolling and quiet. The novel is set in Gorizia, which is a small town in Italy. The country of Italy was involved in the war because it was part of the allied powers, which were strongly against the axis powers. The main character, Fredric Henry, was an American ambulance driver in the war whose job was to aid the Italians when they needed help. The weather also plays a vital role in the novel as well.
