Stopping the Spread of Communism

Summary:   Explores the history of the American struggle against Communism. Also examines the importance of the Truman Doctrine and its role in Cold War policies.


"One of the primary objectives of the foreign policy of the United States is the creation of conditions in which we and other nations will be able to work out a way of life free from coercion," declared President Truman in his Truman Doctrine ("Truman Doctrine Speech" par. 28). This was part of President Truman's speech addressed to Congress as a result of the beginning of the Cold War on March 12, 1947. The fear of the spread of communism brought about the creation of the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall Plan. In addition, this fear led us into joining the Korean War and then the notorious Vietnam War years later
