Explaining the Success of Fascism

Summary:   Fascism as a viable form of government took hold in Italy in 1919-1922. The promise of a strong and regimented government based on nationalism was very attractive in post-World War I Europe. These reasons and others explained fascism's success, but several weaknesses, including rigged elections, and economic problems eventual undid this success.

The Appeal of Fascism

Many Italians regarded the existing system as weak and corrupt:

ØFascism promised strong and regimented government.

Fascist violence:

ØWas directed against the left-wing.

ØShowed that Fascism was strong and ruthless.

Nationalism had a wide appeal:

ØFascism promised to make Italy strong - regain the former Glory of Rome, as per se.

Fascist ideology was vague, promising something for everyone:

ØIt appeared to offer an end to class divisions.

ØSome people liked its anti-socialism stance.

ØSome people liked its revolutionary syndicalism.

Fascism seemed new and exciting:

ØYoung people were lured by the emphasis on action and charge.

ØDiscontented groups hoped that Fascism would smash the old system.

Fascist propaganda was impressive:

ØUniforms, parades and marches all suggested that Fascism was a dynamic movement.
