The Etruscan Civilization

Summary: The Etruscan civilization (900-280 B.C.) is considered to be Italy's first real, advanced, and sophisticated civilization. Although the origins of the Etruscans are unclear, they achieved the peak of their power and wealth in the sixth century B.C., when even the Romans were subject to Etruscan influence. It is believed that the Romans assimilated numerous aspects of Etruscan culture, including religion and engineering. While Rome eventually surpassed the Etruscans and emerged as a great empire, that empire owed a debt for its success and longevity to Etruria.

The Etruscan civilization (900-280 BC), located between the Arno and Tiber Rivers, can be granted with the credit of being Italy's first real, advanced and sophisticated civilization. Etruria was at the peak of its power and wealth in the mid 6th Century, dominating Italy from the Po River to Campania, the Romans themselves subject to Etruscan influence in the early stages of their development as a civilisation. There is, however, a lack of evidence that makes it unclear as to where the Etruscans came from and why the Romans decided to end the reign of Etruscan supremacy. At the height of its political power, Etruria had complete control of Rome, an era known as The Seven Kings (616 - 510BC) and as a result, held great influence over them.
