Often, books have similar setting to our world or extremely different. But this book "The Giver" has a setting which is in-between the fantasy and reality. Can you be happy without realizing what you are missing? The community people think they live in a place like utopia but when the readers read the book everyone discovers that they are not living in a utopia. So, my answer is yes that you can be happy without realizing what you are missing. But are you still going to be happy when you find out the truth? In the book THE GIVER Jonas the protagonist finds out the cruelty of community. He too thought his community was a utopia. When he finds out he is in a very big disappointment.
