We All Fall Down

Summary:   The book We All Fall Down is based on how people hide behind something or pretend to be who they aren't; and sooner or later they get caught.

We All Fall Down and the Theme of You Cannot Hide

The book We All Fall Down is based on how people hide behind something they aren't and sooner or later get caught doing. At first Buddy is hiding from his family life and all his problems. Then Jane tries to just push what happened, to her house and sister, out of the way and just continue. Buddy hides that he trashed Jane's house and that he drinks. These show that people cannot hide behind something because it will come out in the end and you will regret that you didn't come out with it before.

When Buddy tries to hide from his family life and other social problems that he has, then he gets caught up in the wrong crowd. Harry Flowers sees Buddy as vulnerable and someone he can persuade easily and does. Harry takes Buddy and gets him drunk and does stuff with his buddies that he would normally never do. When they trashed Jane's house he knew it was wrong but just went along with it for an excuse to get away. So as Buddy goes and does things that he thinks will get rid of some problems in his life he is really just hiding.

As Jane tries to hide from what happened at her and Karen's house, she sees it slowly affecting her more and more. Jane's family started to stop talking and it would be silent at their dinner table compared to when it was usually talking all the time. Artie, Jane's little brother, stopped playing his video games and playing with his other friends and kind of became solitaire. When Jane was with Buddy she always wanted to just burst out and tell him everything that happened with her house and Karen. When Jane starts to see that she cannot hide from her past and tells Buddy.

Buddy hides his drinking problem and the incident that happened when his friends and him at Jane's house. When Buddy met Jane he drank before he met with her and he drank whenever he had a craving. He always tried to steer away from what happened at Jane's house when she started to mention it and just changed the subject. He also hid that he was friends with Harry Flowers and even knew him. Buddy hid many things from his family and Jane but they all came out and he got caught sooner or later.

When Buddy and Jane were in the mall together and getting off the escalator Buddy had dropped the small bottle of gin and it shattered right in the middle of the mall. Buddy tried to hide that he drank and it came out after some time. Buddy also tried to hide that he was involved with Harry Flowers and with the trashing at Jane's house. When Mickey Looney got Jane in the shed he told her that Buddy helped trash the house. That also came out when Buddy thought he would get away with it. This shows that even though you may get away with something for a while it will come out and when it does you will be in more trouble than you started with.
