Why I Love ROTC

Summary:   Provides a personal perspective of life in the Reserve Officer's Training Corps, or R.O.T.C. Describes the intense physical activity and training classes.

Queen ams, windmills, doubles, wrist breakers, statue of libertys: wondering what these words mean? Well let me tell you. They are all moves I was tought to do with my m1 rifle in a Program I took at a previous school of mine called R.O.T.C or Reserve Officer's Training Corps. Now I will be talking to you about the amazing people I have met and the important lessons I have learned from this fantastic program.

First of all, like I said, you meet amazing people, and good friends. The thing about R.O.T.C. is you have to listen to the people who's rank is above your own.

Essentially you become really close with the people that are the same rank as you because you have to take orders and follow through with those orders with those

people. Also you are usually paired together with your same rank on certain projects or assignments. Than once you're able to get a promotion, your best friend who you've been working with will most likely be able to get a promotion aswell.

That pretty much is what happened with me, when I got promoted, my friend did as well. We ended up working together as C:Po2(Cadet Petty Officer 2nd Class) in Colorguard as flag carriers also in Armed Drill team as Tandom Drill partners.

Basically what i'm trying to say is that once in R.O.T.C. you're guaranteed to make a friend because of the reason I just showed you. I'm pretty sure everyone can agree that that's a very good thing.

There are also AMAZING teams in R.O.T.C. For example we have Color guard, Armed-Drill Team, Un-Armed Drill Team, Physical Training Team, Rifle Team, Academic Team, and last the Orienteering team.

Let me explain to you what each one of these teams do. Color Guard is basically a 4 man team, 2 flag carriers, and 2 rifle carriers. The color guard would march in the middle of the field or court depending on

what sport we were at, and we would do this while the national anthem was playing. That's basically what the color guard does. Next we have the Armed Drill Team, which is my favorite, because you get to spin the rifle.

What we do is go to competitions and spin in unison or split apart and do certain moves with the rifle. We would also perform in front of the school. There is also a tandom armed drill team which is the two best spinners

show off in competitions and do their best moves that most people cant, while also doing them in unison. Next we have the un-armed drill team, which essentially is the armed drill team but without rifles. Mostly girls

would be the ones in the un-armed drill team. There is also the physical training team, another favorite of mine. This is the team that does the push ups and sit ups which is what all the stereotypical people think of when

anything about physical training concerning the military is brought to mind. But that's not all we do, we also run, work out with weights, mountain hiking, and swim.

Next we have the very popular rifle team, which is shooting a live weapon (Which means a weapon with ammunition) at a designated target anywhere from 10 yards to even 150 yards away. Also there is the self explanatory

Academic team, which of course is where you take tests of anything from naval history to space flight. Finally we have the Orienteering team, also one of my favorites because you learn how to find your way around with just a compus.

It also teaches you how to negotiate certain terrain that you might have to deal with if you would ever get lost while hiking. So basically what Orienteering is is you have your starting point and you get a map and a compus.

On the map it has several points but you dont know what direction they are, or how far they are, and you have to get to those points with only your compus. The goal is to get the best time, you're usually rewarded with medals.

You now know all about the teams in R.O.T.C. and how you can learn some pretty usefull things from this program. Let me rap things up with what I think is one of the greatest possibilities that you can achieve from

this program, and that is college. Not only does being in R.O.T.C. in highschool look EXTREMELY good on college applications, but you can get scholarships from it and get in some of the best colleges in the world. For example

the Naval Academy, my personal favorite, or West Point, the Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, Texas ATM. The list just goes on and on. But it's not just that, R.O.T.C. teaches you discipline and responsibility among many other things

that are very usefull when you become older. I know that I am extremely grateful to have been able to participate in this AMAZING program. I wish that everyone could have experienced some of the incredible things that I have in R.O.T.C., and I hope

if there every is a time that you are able to participate in the R.O.T.C. program, that you do. It has changed my life in a very good way, and I am confident it would change yours aswell.
