Comparison between the Movie "the Fifth Element" and American Society

Summary:   An obvious resemblance exists between the movie The Fifth Element and our society today. Society in the future as depicted in The Fifth Element involves the regular appearance of aliens and technological advances from our current society. However, the emotions felt by the future society's members and the way in which the future society lives are practically the same as within our society today.

Comparison between the movie "The Fifth Element" and our society nowadays

"What's the use of saving lives... when you see what you do with them"" asks Leeloo moments before Evil is predicted to hit the world in "The Fifth Element." Movie directed by Luc Besson that came out in 1997, situated around the 23rd Century where cars fly and people can be made with only one living cell. Life depicted in "The Fifth Element" can be compared with the world today because of its obvious resemblance. By examining the similarities between the future according to the movie "The Fifth Element" and emotions felt today, the way in which society lives now and how people are controlled nowadays, it is obvious that life in the future will not change too much from what it is in the present.

The most important similarity that society has with society from the movie, is the emotions people feel. Everyone depicts the future with a lack of emotions, that couples are not going to exist because everyday, people are needing less and less a partner to share emotions, sexual relations, problems and so on, but this movie proves this theory wrong. It is obvious that throughout the movie the two main characters fall in love without even noticing. It is clear that they do not have sex, when they have sexual intercourse; they are making love to each other, just like it is supposed to be today. This fact has been changing as time passes because it has become more usual that people have sexual intercourse outside their marriage or with someone they do not really love. It is evident that love is included in this movie because it is the 5th element which is needed to save the world. What this movie is trying to convey, is that society has to maintain the love it has today because if love disappears, human race could disappear as well. Love is not the only emotion that people from the movie feel, when faith is lost because there was no way to save the world, fear appears, something which feels society constantly today because of wars, illnesses and many more. Leeloo feels anger when she finds out how society acts, for example how humans destroy each other by fighting or how people do not appreciate what each one has. This is another emotion that humans from today feel as well, for example when there is injustice, when things do not end up being as wished, one gets angry, just like happens in the movie. Emotions are a clear example to compare because it can be found in both, society today as well as society from the future. Although this is a very good example, there is another one like lifestyle.

Lifestyle of the inhabitants of New York City in the movie is very similar to the way in which society lives today. A typical house from nowadays has a kitchen, beds, refrigerators, coffee machines, showers and so on. This is practically how people in the movie lived like, just how society lives today. People in the movie have jobs like taxi drivers, working at McDonalds, scientists, etc... Exactly how today's society's jobs are. Another way in which the movie's society is similar to the one today is the ways in which they spend their leisure time. They like going to concerts, listening to the radio and travel, something very common in the society today. Although they like doing the same things as people do today, it also depends on the class they are in because just like today, society in the movie is classified by different classes, and only the people who are well-off, are able to travel and pay very expensive things, just like happens today. As well as the lifestyle, the way in which society is controlled can also be compared because it is something found in both societies.

The way in which people are controlled in the movie is like society is controlled today. Everyone is an individual and they have the freedom to think whatever they want. They can decide what they want to work in or what type of clothes they want to wear, the same type of freedom most of the society gets today. A form of control that can also be found today is the government. The movie has a president, and because it is situated in the United States, in this case the president is from this country, which is the same way in which the United States is governed today. Religion is something very important for the society in the movie as well as for the one today, which could be considered as another way of control. This is proven when the president decides to hear what the priest has to say and believes what he says. This is very similar to society from today because most of the inhabitants from the world have a religion and believe firmly in what it says, some follow it more strictly than some others, but most do believe in something. Security is also a very close similarity between both because in the movie, with only a scan of the face, they could have all the history of that person. Nowadays, for example, with just a fingerprint, people from the airport can know all of your history. This has been implanted in the United States and probably will continue to extend until all of the airports have this system. This is a way of control because everyday it is easier to access information about people, therefore less privacy.

Basically life in the movie "The Fifth Element" is practically the same as life today. Obviously, all the technology the movie has as well as the aliens that appear can be excluded. Up until now, there is no type of evidence that shows there are aliens living in other planets. If life in the future does really end up being like life in the movie, people from today shouldn't worry too much because what the future shows, is a very good life for everyone.
