A History of the American Colonies and Declaration of Independence

Summary:   Events leading up to the Revolutionary War and the Declaration of Independence in 1776, including resentment of British rule, excessive taxes, no representation in British government, and a desire for greater liberty.


Although the American colonists only protested English control in the late 1760s, the seriousness of the protests increased dramatically in 1770. From 1770 onwards, newspaper articles and cartoons fostered independence from the British and there were major acts of conflict and rebellion, including the Boston Tea Party in 1773. Americans continued to demand their own government. This built up to the introduction of the bill for Declaration of Independence before Congress. This was the formal act that dissolved the ties with England. This resulted in the ratification of the American Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776

Around 1770, the increase in American resentment towards the British started being communicated around the colonies. Around 1770 to 1774, cartoons in American colonial newspapers showed growing resentment as England tried to strengthen its control over America. (Doc. L).....
