Plot Summary of the Orphan Train Adventures

Summary: One of Joan Lowery Nixon's stories in her Orphan Train Adventures series is entitled A Dangerous Promise. In this story, twelve-year-old Mike Kelly and his sixteen-year-old best friend become drummer boys in the Union army at the start of the Civil War. Possessing visions of glory when he enlisted, Mike would be changed forever by the horrors of war and the loss of his best friend in battle.
The book starts out with the main character Mike meeting a friend next door. The friend teaches Mike the drums and all the army calls and they get a fantasy where they ran away from home and joined the union army. So they decided to follow through and they run away from home to Kansas City, where they know that there is a Union Army Division in need of musicians. The only problem is that both boys were underage; you had to be 16 to join the army. One looks older then he actually is, but the other doesn't.

They Arrive in Kansas City and go to the army division, and the Sergeant lets Mikes friend in the army but asks Mike to go home. But in a last effort of desperation he started beating all the army calls on his drum and the Sergeant is impressed and he...
