One of the main characters of the story is Wang Lung. In the story his character evolves from the beginning to the end and shows it the forces that have changed him. Wang Lung is a farmer who is obsessed with land and it's his only wealth at the beginning of the story. Wang is the type of person who worries over what people think of him. In the beginning of the story he is a naïve country pumpkin. During the middle of the story he starts to become wealthy. Then of course at the end he is wealthy. These are the changes that Wang Lung goes through in the story.
