In 1521, in a country that did not have any formal religion, something happened to convert 9 million people to Christianity. The Virgin Mary appeared to an Indian man in a country that had been invaded by Spanish forces. At first all he heard were birds singing. Then he heard a voice and saw a beautiful lady. She spoke the native language but gave herself a name in Spanish; Guadalupe.

On December 9, 1531, the 55 year old man named Juan Diego was rushing down tepeyac hill to get to mass service when the Blessed Virgin appeared to him. She told him to go to the bishop and ask him to have a temple built where she stood. Bishop Zumarraga refused at first. Our lady appeared to Juan Diego again that night asking that a temple be built. The bishop had Juan investigated and watched. He finally told him to ask the lady...
