The True Meanings of the Scarlet Letter
One of the main symbols in The Scarlet Letter is the scarlet letter, "A." The letter A appears in a variety of forms and places. Not only does it appear in a variety of forms, but it also has a variety of meanings. In the beginning, the letter "A" symbolized adultery, which Hester Prynne was condemned to wear for committing such a grave sin. However, as time goes on, throughout the novel, the letter "A" starts to represent different things. The scarlet letter is interpreted in many different ways by each character in the book.
Hester Prynne had to wear the scarlet letter as the Puritan's way of punishing her for her sin. As Hester walked through the streets in town, the people would look upon her as if she was some sort of criminal. They treated her as if she was a beast....
