B1. Franklin does not directly state that General Braddock was responsible for the disaster at Fort Duquesne. This statement however can be inferred. It can be attributed to two main flaws in Braddock's character: his arrogance and lack of common sense. First, Braddock had too much self-confidence. He held his skilled regular troops in high esteem and regarded the American troops of Indians and colonists as being naïve and incompetent. This is exemplified when he neglected his Indian aides, causing them to leave. He failed to see that they, knowing the land, would have been very useful acting as scouts or guides. Thus, Braddock was unaware of the attack, since he was ignorant of his enemy's whereabouts. Braddock's lack of common sense also caused him to plan too rashly.
