Odysseus Vs O Brother Where Art Thou

Summary: Compares the epic poem Odysseus to the movie O Brother Where Art Thou. Describes how some characters have the same names, both main characters are on journeys and other characters serve similar roles.
The poem "The Odyssey" and the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" are very much alike. For example some characters have the same names, both main characters are on journeys and other characters play similar roles as those in the "Odyssey" .

The first similarity between the book and the movie is Both main characters are on a journey to get their wives back. Both Odysseus and Ulysses were in similar situations where they had escaped from a jail, Ulysses was in a jail and Odysseus was stuck on a monsters island. Each character had been separated from his wife in one way, Odysseus's wife was back at home and Ulysses was attempting to win his wife back.. They both also at one point were in disguise. The three men including Ulysses were first disguised as members of the Klu Klux Klan and then second disguise as the country singers. Odysseus had a disguise when he arrived back home, he was disguised as a poor beggar. The two characters also experienced nostos and had a desire to go home. So both main characters were very much alike.

Farther similarities were in the roles that some characters may have played. The women in the lake who had seduced the three men traveling together were similar to the sirens in "The Odyssey." Once the men woke up along side the river their friend Peter was gone and they thought the women turned him into a frog, once the frog had been killed th. This is also similar to when the suitors and Penelope (Odysseus's wife) all thought Odysseus's was dead. The bible salesman, Big Dan, that was against the three characters played a similar role as Cyclops against Odysseus. Character names that were similar was King Menalaius and the governor in the movie was also named Menalaius. One of the characters from the movie also told one of the main characters that women can't be trusted just as Agamemnon told Odysseus in the book.

In conclusion the poem "The Odyssey" and the movie "O Brother Where Art Thou" are very much alike because the main characters go through similar experiences, also there are names that are the same, and some characters play similar ones to those in the movie or either the poem. In the End both characters Ulysses and Odysseus are reunited with their wives, the people that were against them are gone, and people realize Peter isn't dead as people know Odysseus isn't dead. The stories have a similar plot line, and end the same way with many similarities.
