Biography of Chemist John Dalton

Summary:   A biography of John Dalton and his contributions to the science of chemistry.


John Dalton was most likely born on September 6, 1766 in Cumberland, England. However, he could have been born on September 5th. The actual date of his birth is not known due to insufficient records. His father, Joseph was a Quaker weaver. When Dalton turned twelve, he took charge of a Quaker school in Cumberland. A couple years later, he taught with his brother in Kendal for twelve years. He then decided to move to Manchester where he became a teacher of mathematics and natural philosophy at New College. (Olson) In 1793, Dalton published Meteorological Observations and Essays. He published the first description of color blindness the next year because both Dalton and his brother were color-blind. It was called Extraordinary Facts relating to the Vision of Colours.
