Summary:   Analyses how language is used in writing and in speech. Explores how language can indicate many things about the author such as background, origins, and occupation.


As Oliver Wendell Holmes said, "Language is the blood of the soul into which thoughts run and out of which they grow." Language is the defining aspect of the personality. In James Baldwin's words, it is the "key to identity." In one word, a person can confess much about their background, personal life, origins, education, and occupation to a conversational partner.

It can be argued that language does not make up one's character. President George W. Bush is a very good example of this phenomenon. For example, he was born to a very wealthy family, and had a very high-class education, but when he speaks, his speech patterns do not reflect that. He uses diction that is very colloquial and down to earth to the middle class of America. Also music artists, namely rap artists,.....
