The Crucible, by Arthur Miller is based on the tragic Salem Witch Trials of 1692. This play takes a look into the lives and emotions of many characters that lived in Salem, Massachusetts during these trials. One of the major themes in The Crucible is courage. The theme of courage in The Crucible is interesting because it is demonstrated in such different, and at times, contradicting ways. Two of the most courageous characters in this play, are using their courage against each other. Abigail Williams demonstrates courage in an attempt to keep the trials going, while John Proctor summons his courage in attempt to put an end to the trials.
