The Life of Avi Wortis
A complex childhood never stopped Avi from living the life of a respected novelist. On December 23, 1937, Avi Wortis, along with his twin sister Emily, was born in New York City. Throughout his childhood, Avi was forced to deal with the criticism from his school and family.
During his childhood, Avi and his family discovered that he had dysgraphia. Despite the constant criticism from his school, Avi continued to write. Avi felt like an outsider in many social circles. After his junior year in high school, Avi's parents told him he was in desperate need of a tutor. Avi met with a tutor every day of the summer. His tutor not only taught him the basics but also encouraged him to be a skilled writer some day.
After graduating from Elisabeth Irwin High School, Avi attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He received a Bachelor's Degree in History in 1959 and later received a Master's Degree in Drama in 1962.
After trying many different jobs, he then became a librarian. On November 1, 1963, he married his first wife Joan Gabriner and later had two sons, Shaun and Kevin. Avi began to write children's books when he had his own children. He left other writing interest and made writing children's books the center of his life.
Avi's first children's book, "Things That Sometimes Happen", was published in 1970. He hit a fallow period and then wrote "No More Magic." Since Avi's books "Encounter at Easton", "The Fighting Ground", "The Man Who Was Poe", "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle", and "The Barn" are historical fiction books, Avi became known as a historical novelist.
Avi is also known for changing the themes of his book. One year he might write a mystery book, and he might write a comedy the next year. "Beyond the Western Sea" is an adventure story with two volumes. Avi wrote an amusing book called "S.O.R. Losers" in 1984. He also wrote dramatic novels like "Emily Upham's Revenge" and "The History of Helpless Harry."
He won over ninety awards for his astonishing books. "Crispin: The Cross of Lead" won the Newberry Medal. In Crispin: The Cross of Lead, a young boy with no identity is accused of murder. He discovers what his name and identity is when he ventures out with Bear.
Avi has written a variety of unique books and novels. After all of the years of criticism, discouragement, and doubt, Avi Wortis became someone no one ever thought he would be: a novelist.
