The Life of Avi

Avi's writings have a lot to do with his own life experiences. He was born in New York City on December 23, 1937 with his twin sister, the one who started calling him Avi for unknown reasons. Now Avi is the only name he uses.

When he was in school, Avi's writing was thought to need tutoring. One of his English teachers gave him the help he needed. Once his writing had improved, he was 17 years old and decided to become a writer. At first he wrote horrible plays, and it wasn't until he had his eldest son, Shaun, that he started writing for children. His first book was published in 1970. Since then, he's published over 30 more books.

One of his recently published books, Never Mind! is about two twins, a boy and a girl, and how one was so much better than the other, until it came to a situation where they HAD to help each other out. The oldest is a boy named Edward who is only five minutes older than his sister, Meg. Meg is smarter than Edward when it comes to school, but the two twins were in the same class until eighth grade. Avi's twin sister is five minutes younger than him and they were both in the same class until eighth grade. His sister was also the smartest of the family and his older brother went to college at the age of 15.

After he had his kids, he went writing children books, and when Shaun got older, he started writing teen books. Things That Sometimes Happen is a book filled with short stories for early readers that will have them on the floor laughing out loud. On the other hand, Wolf Rider is a book labeled for teens. It is about a teenager who gets caught up in a prank phone call that could result in life or death. Avi also got a phone call very similar to the one in the beginning of the book and he wouldn't stop talking about it until one of his sons, Kevin, told him to stop talking about it and just write a book on it. So he did. Avi wrote many more books including, Midnight Magic, Something Upstairs, No More Magic, Who Was That Masked Man, Anyway", S.O.R. Losers, and Don't You Know There Is A war On? Today, in 2005, Avi is still living and is still a very well-known author.
