The Wizard of Oz and Imaginative Journeys

Summary:   This is an analysis of the film The Wizard of Oz in terms of the concept of the imaginative journey. Imaginative journeys have the ability to transform ideas and beliefs in a positive way, and are not bound by time or location.

The Wizard of Oz is a film which portrays convictions and ideas on imaginative journey through a dream sequence. In the film it is established through filmic techniques that an imaginative journey is taking place. One of these techniques is the transition from black and white to colour in the film when Dorothy the protagonist enters her imagined world. The film's crux lies in the notion that imaginative journeys have the ability to transform and alter ideas and beliefs in a positive way. The imaginative journey which Dorothy undertakes acts as a catalyst and brings about a change in her attitude and alters her perception of herself and the people around her.

This transformation is also brought about through the limitations and obstacles which are faced in her imaginative journey. The obstacles in particular which she faces is her confined way of thinking. Through overcoming these obstacles such as the lion's quest for courage, she is able to perceive herself and the people around her differently and overcome her initial challenge, by not running away from her problems as she did previously, but facing them. She comes to the realisation that despite her problems she is surrounded by people who love her and that "there is no place like home." This paradigm shift shows the powerful and transformative nature of imaginative journeys. The film also portrays the timeless nature of imaginative journeys through the exclusion of time changes in the narrative. Never once is the time established and there has been no distinction between one day from another in the film which shows that imaginative journeys are not bounded by time or place.
