The Elements and Purposes of Government

Summary:   This analysis of the nature of government includes exploring its many functions. These include maintaining civil order, regulating society, and protecting the rights of the citizens.

Everyone is fond of freedom but too much freedom can be harmful. Every society has to have a limit on their freedom in order to civil in order whereas if there was total freedom, anyone can do anything regardless if it is just or not. Any civil dispute can result in death which can create a chain reaction in civil disputes. This is where the government comes in. in order to maintain civil order; the government has to regulate society in a calm and justifiable way. The purpose of the government is not to hurt the people of the nation, it is supposed to keep it maintained and protect their rights.

The government may hurt society financially but it is for a good cause. The law enforcement requires money to hire the officers who enforce the laws in order to protect your rights or punish you for breaking the law. Most of the money the government collects is beneficial. It goes to the services the government provides to make the streets, schools, and a lot more that are necessities. Without streets, cops, and schools, the people of the state would struggle to live their lives.

Another purpose of the government is to institute justice in the state. When someone has been negatively affected by someone else action, the government will resolve the matter with the most considerable solution. For example, someone damages you property. The government will force them to repay for the damage. The government also has laws that protect unfair labor. There is a minimum wage on the pay rate which benefits the workers. There is also workers compensation for when you are injured and not able to make work. You are compensated by your employer for a certain amount of time until you are able to work again.

The government also provides military protection from other states. With out this protection, our lives can be taken over by another force easily. During World War 2, with out the help of out military, we defeated the Nazi regime. They could have easily taken over the USA if it hadn't been for our military. Other nations that have militaries were taken over because they did not have a strong one, therefore, it is important to build up a nation's defense incase of invasion.

It is also important to support the general welfare. The government protects the air we breathe, the water we eat, and the food we eat by enforcing sanitary standards. The government also regulates steel mills, airlines, and coals mines in order to make it all affordable to the people and safe for the people. Schools are supported by the government so that the nation's children and be educated at a low expense.

A government is obviously very important for society. There may be some imperfections in the government but it is doing the job to protect the people so far. Imagine a state without a government. There would be chaos all over since there wouldn't be anyone to regulate the society. Not everyone uses their freedom in consideration of other people which can back fire towards them and cause a commotion. So that is the purpose of the government, to protect the rights of society.
