If it is true that traditional Chinese opera is an art form written and performed through exactly controlled masks, makeup, and props to please and amuse the gods (who are symbolized as figures of humor and intelligence), then the same might be said for classical ceremonial Greek dramas, which were done in amphitheatres as civic/religious events. The main event happened in March when the Great Dionysia was celebrated in honor of the Greek god Dionysius, "the god of wine and crops" ("Theater"). This was a celebration that included sacrifices, prize ceremonies, and three days of drama ("Theater"). Great Dionysia was a very important celebration for all poets and writers of the time, it was their time to shine, for their works to be set in front of an immense audience (nearly 17,000 spectators) and compete for.....
