History

The Book of Jeremiah was written by the prophet Jeremiah. This book was written in between the time that Jeremiah was living, 627BC through 580BC. This book was based on what Jeremiah did in his life; he was a prophet of God. God told him to do many things. The main thing he did was prophesying that Judah and its people were soon to be completely non-existent.

Summary

In the Land of Benjamin there lived a man by the name of Jeremiah. God appeared to him and said that he shall go out and proclaim his word. Jeremiah said he was too young and could not possibly do all of this. God told him to have faith and that he would provide the words of which he would be speaking. At this time the people of Israel lived in sin, they were committing adultery and breaking the sixth commandment in everyway possible. God told Jeremiah to return to their state of peace and flee from sin. God said if they listened to him he would not be angry because he is merciful. God told Jeremiah to stand near the temple's gates and tell all the people who enter that they are now in the house of the Lord, and they should follow God and live by the Ten Commandments. He mentioned to them that there is only one true god who they all should worship, Jesus. The Lord told Jeremiah that the men who commit adultery will have there wives taken away from them and they will be given to strangers. And the men will be placed in walled cities for the rest of their lives and they will not see their wives again.

God told Jeremiah to tell the people of Judah that this is their last warning. He wants them to start acknowledging him as the wonderful God he is. God told Jeremiah that there is a great drought in the land of Judah. In all of Judah water is very scarce. The livestock of Judah is dying because there is no feed for them to eat and no water for them to drink.

God instructed Jeremiah not to marry anyone at this time or have any children since they were in a land that was filled with sin God was punishing them. Anyone who had children would be stricken with a deadly disease and there children would also be stricken with this disease.

God told Jeremiah to stand by the gates of the Land of Benjamin and while he was there he told everyone who passed to honor the Sabbath day. He told them to be with there families, have no worries, and not to lift a finger and do work. Work was to be done every day besides the Sabbath day.

Jeremiah went to the potter's house and waited for God's message. God told him to watch the potter and how he makes something out of clay, and what he does not like he just destroys it. God told Jeremiah that sometimes he feels like just wiping out everything on the world. God told Jeremiah to buy a flask and go to the gates with the elders. When he was there he was prophesying. He took the flask and smashed it against the ground, and he said "Thus will I smash the people and this city, as one smashes a clay pot so that it cannot be repaired.

Jeremiah was heard prophesying by a priest. The priest had Jeremiah scourged and placed in the stocks at the upper gate of Benjamin in the house of the Lord. There are people walking around speaking "the word of god." They are not prophets; they are just walking around and the want attention.

God told Jeremiah to stand in the court of the house of the Lord and speak to the people of all the cities of Judah and tell them to obey the Lord for he is easy to anger. He told them to follow the ways of the commandments which God has already been given. The priests who heard this order that he be put to death. But the princes and the people stood up for Jeremiah and said he does not deserve death. There was a false prophet whose name was Uriah, he prophesied and told everyone the exact opposite of Jeremiah. When the king heard this he became furious and ordered him to die. Uriah heard this and fled for Egypt, the king sent Elnathan and some others to bring him back. When they returned with him the king had him slain and his corpse was thrown in a common grave.

God told Jeremiah that soon he will start a new covenant with Judah and Israel; it will be much different than the other one he made with the patriarchs. The Lord said that Babylon would perish because of there sins. Jeremiah told Seraiah when he goes to Babylon to read to the people all of there misfortunes, then he would tie a stone to the book and throw it into the Euphrates River, and then he would say "Thus shall Babylon sink!" Seraiah did as he was told.

The destruction of Jerusalem began when Nebuzaradan burnt down the Lord's home and every other large building in Jerusalem. He also stole many possessions from the Lord's temple. In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of Jeroiachin, the king of Judah, Evil-merodach released Jeroiachin from prison and gave him a high place in government, much higher than anyone else who was already there. While he was there he had perpetual allowance until he died.
