Many characters in the novel The Hobbit evolve throughout the story. One of them, Bilbo Baggins has many characteristics that are developed throughout the story. He goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero by the end of the

story. Three reasons why this is so are because he was a humble homebody at the start of the story, he took care of himself in times of danger, and he stood out amongst the group at the end. In conclusion, Bilbo develops many characteristics and goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero.

First of all, Bilbo goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero because he was a homebody to begin with. Bilbo like to follow a certain schedule. He does not like to be late because when Gandalf asks him to go on an adventure, Bilbo says, "'We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing

uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!'"(4) This also proves that he strongly disliked adventures. Lastly, Bilbo is from the respected Baggins family who are known to never go on adventures. Therefore, Bilbo goes from a

homebody to a hero because he was a homebody to begin with.

Secondly, Bilbo goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero because he took care of himself in times of danger. First of all, Bilbo took care of himself when he was alone in the Misty Mountains. When he escapes and goes to the

dwarves alone and alive, Tolkien says, "The dwarves looked at him with quite a new respect, when he talked about dodging guards [and] jumping over Gollum." (94) Also, he took care of himself when the dwarves got captured by the giant spiders and Bilbo rescued them by himself. Concluding, Bilbo evolved from a homebody to a hobbit hero because he took care of himself in times of danger.

Lastly, Bilbo goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero because he stood out amongst the group of dwarves at the end of the journey. Firstly, he stood out because the group asked for his opinion in important matters. In chapter twelve, Tolkien says, ."..the dwarves begged [Bilbo's] pardon. 'What then do you propose we should do, Mr. Baggins"'"(220) Also, the group always send Bilbo to check on the dragon smug. Therefore, Bilbo went from a homebody to a

hobbit hero because he stood out amongst the group of dwarves.

In retrospect, Bilbo goes from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero throughout the course of the novel. This is so because at the beginning, he started of as a homebody. Also, he took care of himself in times of danger. Lastly,

he stood out amongst the group of dwarves. In conclusion, Bilbo may still be the same hobbit that loves tea and cake, but he has evolved from a humble homebody to a hobbit hero.
