The literary classic, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding includes a number of symbols. The Beast is an important symbol in Lord of the Flies; it is not a tangible object that can be killed or destroyed by conventional means, but an idea capable of manifesting itself according to the specific condition of each boy. This allows it to transcend typical fear and delve deep into the human psyche.

The fear of the Beast begins in the dark, when the boys are most vulnerable. It began as one of the little'uns mistook a creeper for a serpent creature. To the child, this could have been a simple fear of the dark.
