Pip, like the other characters in Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations," must overcome tremendous adversity to achieve his goals. Pip questions his identity and poor upbringing and this leads to his obsession about becoming a "gentleman."

No person maintains the same character throughout their entire life, because the experiences they go through in life change that person for the better or for the worse. In the novel Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, each character changes through the experiences they encounter. The novel is about a boy named Pip, who lives a hard life out on the marshes. His life changes forever when he is unexpectedly given a lot of money by a mysterious benefactor, and suddenly Pip's dream of becoming a gentleman is realized.
