"Spinster" by Sylvia Plath

Summary: An analysis of Sylvia Plath's poem "Spinster." Written in a strict, harsh, and frosty tone, the poem is about a girl who is uncomfortable with the confusion that love brings and wants her life to be orderly and quiet. She thus builds a mental barrier to protect her from love so that no ordinary man can tear it down.

This poem immediately gets the reader's attention by the way that it is formatted. There are 5 neat stanzas, with exactly 6 lines in each stanza. The structure is a good example of how the girl in this poem likes things to be done. If the poem was all one stanza, with no space in between, then it wouldn't represent the feelings of the girl as well. The repetition of periods at the end of each stanza also supports the attitude of the poem, which is strict in appearance.

First, there is the title. Simply the title creates a great deal of different pictures for the reader. A woman with a tight bun, dark, long clothes, and no makeup, but a very clean face, comes to mind.
