A War That Stirred a Nation

Summary: At the time of the Mexican American conflict the United States military was ill suited for military combat. Thus the Mexican American war was to prepare the United States' soldiers for future combat in the Civil War. Much of the military was young and inexperienced. The American victory in the Mexican American war gave the United States its largest territorial acquisition since the Louisiana Purchase. The military combats during the war provided the nation not only with an improved military, but also with political leadership.
From its humble beginnings the United States urged to fulfill its "manifest destiny." Having already acquired Florida in 1819, and the Louisiana territory in 1803 territorial acquisition was a tangible concept to the American populace. Despite these gains, fueled by the growing need for land as the population increases, national pride, as well as the dire need to defend the nation form external oppositions, the country desired more. By 1841, Mexico had acquired its independence from Spain; this left Mexico with acres of extraneous uninhabited land. To make use of these lands, the Mexican government continued the Spanish practice of encouraging Americans to settle in the lands of northern Mexico; thus developing the Mexican land and gaining revenue (through taxation) from the American immigrants.
