Surviving Alienation: Survivor Type and "Cast Away"

Summary: Many similarities exist between Stephen King's novel Survivor Type and Robert Zemeckis' film "Cast Away" beyond the obvious one of unknown islands as the settings. Each story involves a man in a travel accident who winds up drifting to the shore of a deserted island, and both stories are similar in terms of the influence of the setting, the affects of extended isolation, and the symbolism of various elements. However, the different decisions made by both main characters reflected on their eventual outcomes in the end.
Surviving Alienation

After reading Stephen King's Survivor Type, and watching Robert Zemeckis production of Castaway, I have noticed many similarities in the both the setting and the plot, aside from the fact that both are taking place on unknown islands. In both stories, two very normal, successful grown men are in some sort of traveling accident which lead them both to drifting to the shore of a deserted unknown island. Some of the similarities in the stories are the influence of the setting, the affects of extended isolation, and symbolism of elements such as the heroin in Survivor Type and Wilson in Castaway. Although both stories and circumstances may be very similar, the actions of the characters play a serious role in determining the outcomes of each survivor.
