Similarities between Pearl and Chillingworth in The Scarlet Letter
Who would think a studious old man named Chillingworth and a wild and young child named Pearl would have anything in common? These two characters have a great number of differences but, they have many more similarities. They differences lie in their motives for finding the truth, appearance, and morals and their similarities are in their association with evil, uncanny intuition and interest in nature.
Pearl and Chillingworth differ in their motives for finding the truth, appearances, and their morals. Pearl has a very innocent reason for seeking and finding the truth. She seeks it because she wants to know her father. While, Chillingworth's sole reason for finding the truth is to reap his revenge on the man who sinned with Hester. They also differ in their appearances. Pearl is of "perfect shape" and Chillingworth has "one shoulder rose above the other." ...
