Women's Fashion during the Renaissance Elizabethan and Jacobean Eras

Summary:   Descriptions of women's clothing during the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras of the European Renaissance. Clothes customs were tied to the social class: the royal family and noblewomen wore elaborate gowns, for example; women in rich families favored pendants and jewels; and working people wore simple clothes.


Many fashion changes have occurred throughout the centuries. Some of which have been popular, while many have not. One fashion change that lasted a little over a century took place during the Elizabethan and Jacobean Eras. Attractive and appealing, women thought of the style as gorgeous. During the Elizabethan and Jacobean Eras, a woman's social class determined her wardrobe, accessories and undergarment choice.

While women of the royal family and noblewomen dressed in elaborate gowns of velvet and jewel, the middle and lower class women dressed in simple dresses of linen. A tight-fitting bodice, low, square neckline and a full gathered skirt, describes the appearance of a noblewoman's dress. Fastened up the front, "either with lacing or with hooks and eyes," a woman usually needed assistance in putting the gown on ("Elizabethan Outfit" N.P.). Their dresses.....
