The Iroquois were the most widespread Indians of upstate New York and the Lake Ontario region of Canada. Some of the tribes living in this area are the Senecas, the Cayugas and the Onedias.

The area they lived in was peaceful. The land was clear and the weather was made up of four seasons. There were rich farm lands where they lived.

The Iroquois were great farmers. using stone, bone antler and wooden implement to work the soil. Their three most importantcrops were corn, beans, and squash. The Iroquois were great hunters and often referred to as the Woodland Indians. They were skilled in chaseing and trapping the animals of the northern forests. They used their vatch for both food and clothing.they smoked fish and eel in the summer and in fall they smoked venison. They made deerskin shirts, leggings, breechcloths and moccasins. They made robes and mittens from beaver and bear furs.

The Iroquois were great builders. They made clearings in the woods, usually near streams or rivers, and surrounded them with walls made from sharpened logs stuck in the ground. The people in these tribes lived in clusters of long houses. The long houses were sometimes over 100 feet long. The houses were built from

The tribe tribes of this area were different from the other tribes in the United States, because of the type of climate they lived in. Other indian tribes in the united States lived in warmer climates and even deserts. This also made a difference in the types of foods they were able to grow, the types of animals they were able to hunt, and the type of clothing they wore.

What made these tribes unique was the type of shelters they lived in. They were known for living in teepees and wigwams. The Iroquois used the longhouse as a symbol for their league. They were also known for what has come to be known as the Mohawk hairstyle.
