Humanity's Finest Movement?

Summary:   Governments from all over the world are adopting the ideas of the philosophers from the Enlightenment days, scientific breakthroughs are occurring almost every year, and technology has become increasingly more advanced. The Enlightenment was surely a movement which allowed humanity to reach its final intellectual achievements.

All aspects of this world have been shaped through the enlightenment movement in one way or another. Much good has come through this movement. Governments from all over the world are adopting the ideas of the philosophers from the Enlightenment days, scientific breakthroughs are occurring almost every year, and technology has become increasingly more advanced. The enlightenment was surely a movement which allowed humanity to reach its final intellectual achievements.

Some may argue against the positive effects of the enlightenment because much of the technologies that we have obtained are also used for war. Marry Shelly, a writer, expresses her views of the enlightenment in her book called "Frankenstein." In this book, she writes about the story of a monster that was created by science. This can be related to today's technology which can potentially destroy the earth. It is true the enlightenment made way for devastating weapons such as the nuclear bomb, but the enlightenment also helped wipe out diseases such as small pox and created insulin for diabetes. In a broader sense, the enlightenment saved more lives than it has destroyed.

Governments which allowed people the freedom to speak and the freedom to worship whatever they want were born under the ideas of the enlightenment days. Take Canada's government for example, it would have made many of the enlightenment philosophers proud. Canada's three branch democratic government is based on the ideas of Montesque, Voltaire, Rousseau, and several other philosophers.

Canada is an excellent example of the good that came from the Enlightenment. People in Canada have a government Montesque, Voltaire, and many other philisophes would be proud of. The government of Canada is a democratic government with three branches with each having an important role. Because of this, the majority of the people of Canada's voices are heard and their needs can be provided.

Science and technology might have not been as strong as it is today if it weren't for a man named Copernicus. During the beginning of the Enlightenment years, Copernicus began to question the theories of the time and so he developed the scientific method. With the scientific method, scientists began to challenge theories which were considered truth at the time and with this, breakthroughs in science was more than a possibility. Insulin, vaccine for small pox and other diseases could not have been possible without the development of the scientific method.

All of these philosophers and scientists have allowed us to become less ignorant with the world around us and develop advanced technology which is saving millions of lives. Just about fifty years ago, people would have scoffed at the thought of going to the moon. Now that this is happening, it is considered reality. Torture, serfdom, and females having no human rights are considered by the North American and European cultures to be scars against justice. Back then that type of treatment was normal, now it is considered appalling.

The enlightenment has helped evolve science and many governments around the world. Computers, the freedom to speak whatever one may like in some countries, 'innocent until proven guilty' are all things that has happened thanks the enlightenment. A better future has been paved due to this movement where dreams that used to be dreams are now possibilities of the future.
