The Once and Future King

Summary:   The essay is about how the Knights of the Round Table symbolize justice today. The author's name is T.H. White and the title of the book is The Once and Future King

The Once and Future King

A knight sees a woman being swept onto a horse by an evil tyrant. This particular tyrant has been famous for capturing both men and women alike. The brave knight pursues the tyrant on his noble horse. He sees the evildoer ride into a cave, and the knight follows him. "In the name of justice," shouts the courageous knight, "release her!" The tyrant stops, drops the woman, and stares at the knight. He suddenly charges at the brave knight and they battle. More than an hour later, the battle ends. The exhausted knight slowly walks toward the woman. "Are you all right"" asks the knight. "Yes," she replies. Then they both ride back toward the safe lands of Camelot. This knight was indeed a famous knight, also. He was a knight from King Arthur's Round Table, and he had just shown that evil tyrant what it was like to have justice dealt upon him.

Even though we do not have knights riding on horses anymore, government today is nearly identical to that of the Round Table, which was established during King Arthur's reign. The Knights of the Round Table had certain responsibilities such as protecting the citizens, and defending King Arthur's kingdom from anyone or anything that might try to invade his all but peaceful domain. Knights such as Sir Lancelot, Sir Gawaine, and many others were in a number of wars to save the kingdom, just like an army would prevent invasion from happening today.

People in the Middle Ages often needed escorts to get them to their destinations. In that time period the roads were not always safe. One had to be aware of all kinds of dangers like robbers, tyrants, wild animals, outlaws, etc. So who else would be called upon to assure the safety of merchants, nobles, and peasants alike, but the Knights of the Round Table. In those days it was called protection. It would be like people today who need someone to protect them as they head to a different country or a different club; they pay for a bodyguard.

When there is a mystery that needs to be solved, one would hire a detective to go out and investigate. When the government today is notified about something mysterious it becomes a job for the FBI or the CIA or another secret affiliation. In Middle Aged England, mysteries were a little more than rare. But when a big mystery did show up, it turned into a quest. And that quest became a job for none other than the Knights of the Round Table.

King Arthur had a vision that fairness would reign in all his land. He engraved his vision into the hearts of all his knights of the Round Table, so that they would go out and do what is right. This idea still lives today. It is present in our government and in our law system. Everyone is of equal value and importance. It is each and every person's individual responsibility to do what is morally right. Laws are made to ensure that everyone upholds this elaborate Truth. No matter what Age it is, equity is the key to success. Justice for All.
